Statement from Peter Ter Kulve

As at 3.18am this morning, we were informed of the sad passing of the founding father of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew. He was 91.

We share in your grief. As a national leader, former Prime Minister Lee was much loved. He dedicated his life to Singapore, bringing Singapore from third world to first in one generation. Even beyond Singapore’s shores, he leaves a tremendous legacy. As a globally respected statesman, he has had a profound influence across Asia and indeed across the world. Throughout his life, he has been an inspiration and role model to us all.

Unilever and Singapore have had a long and close relationship since 1953, when we opened our first office in Singapore. Due in part to former Prime Minister Lee’s policies, we have grown steadily. Today we have a global hub in Singapore, housing many of our global operations. Unilever is proud and privileged to be a part of the Singapore community and our hearts go out to his family as well as all other Singaporeans during this time of national sadness and grief.

Even as we mourn his loss, we are hopeful that the values and principles of Singapore’s first Prime Minister will continue to serve as a foundation and compass for Singapore. We look forward to continue to work with Singapore and Singaporeans to build on his legacy in the years ahead.

Sincerely,

Peter Ter Kulve
