Unilever supports Green program at Wangsa Maju

Unilever Malaysia personified their mission statement “Adding Vitality to Life” at a fun-filled Environmental Carnival held at the SMK Zon R1 Wangsa Maju in Kuala Lumpur on 28 June.

During the carnival, SMK Zon R1 Wangsa Maju launched its compost and garbage enzyme base – the first school in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur to embark on such a project.

The composting site and composting paraphernalia was sponsored by Unilever. The project will see the active involvement of the students – mainly from the Geography and Nature societies – to collect dry leaves and waste from their school canteen to be processed into compost fertiliser. The process, which is expected to take eight months to complete, will yield compost fertiliser which will then be used as nutrients for plants at the school’s Edible Garden.

Many fun-filled educational and charity activities were included as part of the Carnival. The students creatively made useable items from recycled paper while a display of the longest recyclable rug made from old T-Shirts grabbed the attention of visitors to the carnival. Other activities included the writing of the longest banner filled with environmental messages, planting of vegetables and flowers at the school’s Edible Garden and an exhibition, courtesy of the Department of Environment. Students and visitors also brought along recyclables from their home to help the school raise more funds.green banner_125x110.jpg

Leading Unileverites who turned up in force at the Environmental Carnival where Unilever brands were also on parade at the carnival booths was Andre Rompis, Chairman & Managing Director, Unilever (Malaysia) Holdings Sdn Bhd. “Unilever is pleased to lend support to this project as we believe that each one of us has a role to play in protecting our ecological environment and provide a healthier environment to live in. Such effort shows that we can do our part by just using organic waste from our own home and making a big difference to the environment. By focusing on environmentally-friendly practices, we can each contribute towards a cleaner and healthier environment and surroundings,” said Pak Andre as he encouraged the students participating in the garbage composting project.
