Reiterating Commitment To Road Safety 160508
16-05-2008 : As a country that is developing at a rapid pace, Malaysia has experienced a dramatic increase in the number of vehicle ownership. Unfortunately, the number of road accidents and fatalities as a result of this is also on the rise. According the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), a total of 363,319 accidents were recorded in 2007 alone. Under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP), the Road Safety Plan for Malaysia 2006-2010 was launched, and among its objectives, to reduce road fatalities by 58% by the year 2010.
It its efforts to advocate road safety among its employees and to play its part in reducing these alarming statistics, Unilever (Malaysia) Holdings Sdn Bhd (Unilever Malaysia) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE), a training provider who will conduct a course on defensive driving for all Unilever Malaysia employees.
The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry of Transport in Putrajaya, was witnessed by Road Safety Department Director-General Datuk Suresh Singh. Unilever Malaysia was represented by Nik Mustapha Nik Mohamed, Human Resource and Corporate Relations Director, while ACE was represented by Scott Gibson, its Chief Operations Officer.
“This commitment is a continuation of our internal campaign – Value Life, Value Safety –which was launched back in September 2006. Besides having weekly briefings on road safety among employees, case studies are also discussed. There are also several committees focusing on various aspects of safety in the workplace which have been set up, for example the Safe Travel Action Committee, which are responsible for forming guidelines and best practices where road safety is concerned”, said Nik Mustapha.
As part of the existing internal campaign, Mandatory Standards & Guidelines for Safety in Road Travel booklet, pocket-size 10 Basic Behaviours For Road Safety leaflet and other commemorative items are also produced and distributed to employees of Unilever as gentle reminders that safety is at the heart of its business.
The defensive driving course at ACE will provide employees with hands-on experiences on what exactly is meant by ‘defensive driving.’ At the same time, the course will also give them the opportunity to learn from the experts the finer aspects of road safety.
“Road safety is an important aspect in our business, as our field personnel tend to travel often especially for sales, marketing and product distribution purposes. We are confident that our employees will benefit tremendously from this exercise, and hope that lessons learnt will also be spread to others outside the organization. This exercise will also enable us as a Company to help fulfill the Government’s agenda of reducing road fatalities,” he continued.
The course will be conducted for Unilever employees in batches and will take place at ACE’s premises in Dengkil.
